Why Do Windows Fog?

November 16, 2018adminUncategorizedNo Comments

One issue homeowners may notice arising as the temperature cools is condensation in their windows. Even in a brand new home with new windows, homeowners may find that their windows fog on days when the weather fluctuates.  Read this guide to see why your windows may be fogging up, how you can avoid it, and when to think about replacing the windows completely.

Causes

The main reason windows fog up is because of a difference in humidity between the indoors and outdoors.  This can be even worse in a new home where the building materials are still drying out.  If you have a new home and you find that many of your windows have an issue with fogging up, this is likely the issue.

If your home isn’t new, and you find that a few windows seem to always fog up when the weather changes, the more likely issue is that the windows are not properly sealed.  This is allowing moisture to get trapped between the panes of glass which has a hard time escaping.

How to Fix The Issue

If your new home has a major fogging problem, the easiest solution is often to just air out your home.  Allowing your home to breath will even out the humidity between the indoors and outdoors which will help get rid of the fogging that appears on your windows.

If your old home’s windows seem to be fogging at random, the only solution will be to replace the windows that seem to be having this issue.  It is very likely that the seals on the windows have begun to fail and let in moisture.  Replacing the windows should fix this issue.

Reason To Address

While a bit of condensation in your windows may seem like a minor issue that can put off for another day, it is a good idea to address this issue sooner than later.  While you may think that the moisture is contained between the frames of glass, it can permeate into the frame of your window, where it can cause mold, or rot damage, which quickly becomes more expensive than simply replacing the glass.  If you find that a few of your windows seem to be fogging more quickly or frequently than others, be sure to replace them before they cause more expensive repairs.
