Window Replacement Vs Window Repairs

August 31, 2022adminWindows & DoorsNo Comments

The question of whether you should repair or replace your windows is a very common one and one that’s also not very direct to answer. While many Americans have chosen to repair them, studies have shown that they should have been replaced instead. Nonetheless, not all windows are chipped off to be replaced. You can save money by simply repairing them and they’ll be back to normal. So make sure to read through this brief guide on the difference between when you should replace and when you should repair your windows.

Replacement and Repair: What is it?

Replacement is the complete change of a window from the glass, to the sashes, drip cap, casing, and so on. Here, you also have the choice to pick a different design but it involves the removal of the old window for the new one to be installed. Note that no parts from the old window are attached to the new one. Repair is when some parts of the window are either replaced or fixed. During repair, there can be some level of replacement involved but this is only to a part of the window.

When Should You Repair Your Windows?

You can choose to save money and go for the economical route if you are facing the following problems with your window:

  1. Any minor water leaks around the window are not caused by your window installment but by your drainage. So change the drainage system and that should do the job nicely.
  2. All forms of poor exterior window casing can easily be repaired without compromising the quality of your window.
  3. If you have a missing or damaged exterior drip cap, you can DIY the repair without needing to replace the whole window.
  4. You don’t have to replace your window just because you have a slow-moving or stuck window sash, a simple lifting and rearrangement will do the trick.
  5. When you have broken muntins, remove the glass and clean the area. Then simply add fresh putty and that should be fine.
  6. When your window has cracked or broken glass, you don’t need to replace the whole window. Just change the sash and you’ll be good to go.

When Should You Replace Your Windows?

While repair is cost-effective, you should not consider it in the following situations:

  1. Major water infiltration that’s passing through your windows is a sign it needs replacement.
  2. Structural problems such as falling windows and poor shape mean your windows are due for a change.
  3. Poor interior faux muntins are also signs that you should change the windows completely.
  4. While people think you can repair a window with foggy and inside condensation, it is always better to replace the windows for the most lasting results.
